this morning, major developments from boston. >> exactly one week after terror filled the city, the lone surviving suspect is beginning to tell his story. he had been unable to communicate since his dramatic capture friday night. lives changed, injured, but stronger than ever. we have the first hospital interview from a bombing survivor, as the city continues its rallying cry, boston strong. flight delays, budget cuts kick in today. hitting the faa hard. already triggering long lines at airports nationwide. and an a-list arrest. it's the latest celebrity mug shot. hollywood's darling, reese witherspoon, issuing an apology overnight. and good monday morning.

we may be closer to getting some key answers in the boston bombing investigation today. >> suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev is now awake and communicating in writing with investigato they are anxious to know if anyone else was involved in the bombs waiting to explode. >> one week later, 52 victims are still in the hospital, 3 in critical condition. all victims are being remembered later today with a moment of silence at the time of the first bomb. and then church bells will ring. >> abc's preeti arla begins our coverage. >> reporter: a week after the boston marathon attack, one suspect is dead, the other is in the hospital. but the search for answers continues. law enforcement officials tell abc news 19-year-old suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev is awake. he's unable to speak because of a neck injury authorities believe may be self-inflicted. tsarnaev is answering some questions in writing. we're told authorities asked about potential accomplices and

any unexploded bombs. >> i am not convinced they were planning more attacks. that's hearsay. i haven't got information about that. but, you know, we have to be vigilant. >> reporter: since police captured him after a dramatic d to friday's mat, the brder investigfocuses on his older brother. 26-year-old tamerlan died in a shootout with police. last year, he traveled overseas to russia and chechnya and began linking to jihadist videos online. some wonder why he fell off the fbi's radar after they questioned him about possible terror ties two years ago. >> somehow, he got off the radar screen and traveled overseas to one of the most dangerous parts of the world. >> reporter: the bombings left three dead and dozens injured. many are still in the hospital. yesterday, boston remembered the victims and prayed for healing. >> forgiveness does not mean that we do not realize the heinousness of the crime.

but, in our own hearts, when we're unable to forgive, we make ourselves a victim of our own hatred. >> reporter: and charges are expected to be filed soon in the case. john and diana? >> one big focus is the trip overseas to russia that the older brother took. have we learned anything else about that trip? >> reporter: well, we foe investigators are definitely focusing in on that. they feel that was a turning point in his life. they say he spent about six months over there. during that time, his father tells abc news that he didn't spend any time with religious radicals, but he did become more religious, praying five times a day. so really, still, no key answers on what may have sparked that change. investigators are zoning in. >> preeti arla, thank you. as we mentioned, 52 people who were injured in last monday's attack remain in hospitals. that is down from more than 180 who were treated. three survivors are listed in critical condition, including boston transit police officer richard donohue.

the 33-year-old was severely wounded in the early friday shootout with the bombing suspects. and there's bombing victim kaitlynn cates, who is seen here being carried by a friend. just moments after last monday's bombings. we caught up with them yesterday as she continued her recovery. >> when the first explosion went off, he -- we went to the ground and he jumped on top of me and told me to stay down, just in case there were any more explosives. he picked me up, carried me to where his car is, tied a blanket and his shirt around my leg to stop the bleeding. i'm so blessed. i'm so lucky. god had angels watching me that day. >> cates was visited there in the hospital by president obama last thursday. she says she's feeling much better and she hopes to walk out of the hospital in the next few days. but it was a sad scene as hundreds came out to honor m.i.t. police officer sean collier. the 26-year-old was shot and killed in his police cruiser last thursday night.

his death sparked the manhunt for those suspects. charges against tsarnaev will likely include a weapons of mass destruction charge, which carries the death penalty. with the intense emotion surrounding the case, we asked former u.s. attorney michael garcia whether tsarnaev could get a fair trial in boston. >> very difficult to move a trial. the legal standard. essentially no jury in this city will be able to look fairly on the evidence. very high standard. i believe he will face trial in boston. >> tsarnaev is being questioned without being given his miranda rights as a matter of public safety. one byproduct of the events of last week is a certain sense of boston pride. it was on full display. yesterday as the bruins took part in their annual shirt off our backs ceremony. it's usually a carom for the fans. they asked the first responders to attend and gave them their

jerseys. and there was neil diamond on saturday at fenway park. singing his "sweet caroline." as red sox fans sung along in unison. ♪ sweet caroline ♪ bum, bum, bum >> what a moment. later in this half hour, details about the older brother's american wife. and later on "good morning america," a closer look at any missed warning signs. major breaking news from washington state. five people are dead in a shooting at an apartment complex in the town of federal way, south of seattle. a suspect was shot by police officers. he's believed to be the only shooter. no word yet from investigators on what led to the gunfire. this is a story we'll be tracking all morning. a few of those displaced by the fertilizer plant explosion in texas have been aloud back in their homes for the first time. but most of the small town of west was leveled by the blast. and perhaps most devastating of all is the number of first responders, most of them volunteers, who paid the highest price. here's abc's steve osunsami. >> reporter: outside that massive explosion site at that

texas fertilizer plant, the local sheriff told us that the first responders who died didn't have a chance. [ explosion ] 14 people were killed and authorities say 12 of them were firefighters and paramedics, and other workers there trying to put out the initial fire that may have caused the explosion. >> our priority today is the line of duty death investigation for the firefighters and first responders who lost their lives in this incident. >> reporter: it's one of the greatest losses of first responders since the 2007 charleston sofa factory fire that killed nine. in texas, some families were allowed home. >> i just wanted to come home. i wanted to see my house. >> reporter: mary necker says her house is broken. but she is not. >> that can all be fixed. it's going to take a little while. but it can be fixed. >> reporter: homeowners who they're letting in now still live far away from the plant that exploded. it's several streets, several city blocks that way. they're still worrying about broken gas pipes or pipes
